About FASTag – A FASTag is a square sticker that is attached to the windshield of the vehicles for automatic deduction of toll plazas at various highways. The FASTag runs with Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) barcode which is linked with the registration details of the vehicle and close wallet account.

The inbuilt RFID technology enable the Tag on the vehicles to be read by the barcode reader placed at various toll plazas.  As you drive though any toll plaza on any national highway in India, FASTag readers will read the code and will deduct the amount required from the linked wallet to pass the barrier.

The deduction of toll charges is completely automated and can be done without stopping the vehicle. This technology will reduce the human interfere at a toll plaza and having to pay cash.

How to Buy FASTag ?

FASTag can be purchased through any of the listed banks or eWallets. It can also be purchased online through the separate portal of various banks. Tag can also be delivered  through various e-commerce channels to home. The list of banks which are currently issuing the tags are

SBI, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Syndicate Bank, South Indian Bank, Indus Ind Bank, Yes Bank, Federal bank, City Union Bank, Saraswat Bank  etc. The eWallets in selling FASTags are PayTm, Airtel, Amazon etc.

You can also buy the FASTags at certain toll plazas across India. 

What Documents Do We need to purchase FASTag?

There are basic documents require for buying the FASTag from any of the banks or eWallets. You need to produce your vehicle registration document (RC Copy) and any of the ID proofs like Aadhaar, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport etc. for mandatory KYC process. 

What is the Price of FASTag ?

The cost of the FASTag various as per class of the vehicle and banks. Different category of the vehicles have the different price and it depends on the bank also. The cost of buying depends on two things:

1) Class of vehicle you are buying it for—a car, jeep or van, or a bus or truck, light commercial vehicles, construction machines etc

2) The bank you are buying the tag from will have their own policies regarding issuance fees and security deposits.

At this time, for instance, you can buy a FASTag for a car from Canara Bank for Rs 500 which includes a Rs 300 refundable security deposit, Rs 150 minimum balance threshold and Rs 100 issuance fee. Some banks, on the other hands are offering it for as less as Rs 400. If you are visiting a toll plaza, you can buy it for even lower amounts. You may compare and buy tag from different banks.




How to check balance of FASTag Account ?

Once you buy the Tag from the banks or eWallets, they will create an online linked wallet with your FASTag which will be prepaid in nature. You may recharge and add money to wallet as per your need. For instance, if you buy a Tag from Canara bank, an online wallet will be created which can be credited anytime from the branch counter or Online or though Internet banking, Credit Cards or Debit Cards. 

Secondly, if you are using a mobile wallet apps such as Paytm, PhonePe, they also let you recharge FASTag using Debit Card, Credit Card, UPI and other payment options. Similarly, for Airtel, you can use Airtel Payment to recharge.

What is the validity of the FASTag?

As per guidelines of NPCI, the validity of the FASTag is 5 Years. but in general it is issued for a period of 5 years. The recharge that you do for the account does not have any validity and can remain active in the wallet for the entire duration of the FASTag validity.

Who are exempted to use FASTag ?

FASTag is only an alternative against paying cash at every toll plaza and the personnel designated by NHAI, state highways who are earlier exempted will not be debited charges. These include Honorable Judges, Politicians, Emergency Services among others but in that case also the FASTags are issued with ‘NIL’ charges.

Can I avail a FASTag Monthly Pass or Local Pass?

Yes, the monthly pass is issued by almost all the banks. Customer can apply to individual bank site or NHAI website to get the monthly pass.
