Aadhaar is Not Mandatory For Linking Bank Accounts

Aadhaar not mandatory for opening bank accounts or linking with mobile SIM registration or other related services which includes issuance of tatkal passport services. However, apex court has kept the Aadhaar mandatory for Social Security Schemes and DBT. The apex court ruled that the deadlines for linking to the Unique Identification number stand extended till it decides on its validity. A five-judge Constitution bench of Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan heard a clutch of pleas seeking a stay on government’s decision of mandatory linking of Aadhaar with welfare schemes, as well as essential services like banking and phone.

Important Points

1. The deadline for linking Aadhaar with mobile phones and bank accounts has been extended indefinitely. It means banks or Network services provider can’t insist for Aadhaar number.

2. The SC said that its interim order will remain in force till further verdict
